Spurs ready to make Cole bid

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is poised to kick-start his summer spending spree by offering £15million for Chelsea star Joe Cole.

The White Hart Lane chief, who is known as a wheeler-and-dealer in the transfer market, has so far been frustrated in his attempts to add to his squad with targets Gareth Barry and Roque Santa Cruz joining Manchester City.

But Redknapp is keen to add to his squad and the impending departures of Didier Zokora and David Bentley will free up the finances to move for Cole.

Redknapp has been a long-time admirer of the former West Ham schemer and the arrival of new boss Carlo Ancelotti and Russian wideman Yuri Zhirkov will encourage Redknapp to make his move.

The 27-year-old Cole is still in rehabilitation after suffering a knee ligament injury during Chelsea's FA Cup triumph over Southend in January.

New Italian chief Ancelotti has revealed the Blues will sign £18miilion Zhirkov, who like Cole, is a left-sided player.

Ancelotti said: "Zhirkov is naturally on the left. I think he can do all the work and can play in defence and in between."

Cole is in no rush to leave Stamford Bridge and is set for contract talks with only a year left on his current deal.

Whether Ancelotti sees a long-term future for Cole remains to be seen, but the England man will almost certainly not be allowed to leave for free next summer and Ancelotti might decide to cash in on the player who had his season wrecked by injury.

Ancelotti will also have to resolve the futures of Deco, Ricardo Carvalho and Jose Bosingwa - who have all been strongly linked with moves away from west London over the summer.
