Full name, José Bosingwa da Silva, was born in 1982 in Democratic Republic of the Congo (he plays for Portugal owing to his Portuguese father). He joined Chelsea in 2008 from Porto for £16.3 million. Although not a prolific goalscorer, Bosingwa is noted for his pace, attacking play and defensive capabilities. Bosingwa impressed during Euro 2008 and was named in the UEFA team of the tournament. With Porto, Bosingwa has won the Portugese League 4 times, and the Champions League in 2004 under former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.
Bosingwa is one of three Portuguese international defenders that play for Chelsea, the others being Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira. Bosingwa wears number 16 for Chelsea.
